DONCASTER
Each month DCPG meets with officers from DMBC and other cycling groups to consult on cycling issues in the borough here is a breakdown of schemes that are currently being progressed.
Cyclepath Schemes
Doncaster Greenway – A link from the town centre to Rossington has been an issue for which DCPG has campaigned for many years. Now, thanks to Martin Bright and our friends from Sustrans in partnership with DMBC, this dream has become a reality. Last year saw the opening of the southern section of the green corridor which links Woodlands, Scawthorpe and Bentley with the Town Centre. This year works are being carried out to extend the existing southern corrodor through Lakeside and Bassacarr onto Rossington. This will be a significant improvement for cycling because the route into town is direct and can substancially shorten journey times against any other form of transport. The works should be completed by early summer and DCPG have planned a promotional ride on this route in early autumn (see rides prog.). Sustrans are launching an information leaflet on the Northern Section in time for Bike Week.
Armthorpe Road – Works from Thorne Road to Ledger Way are now largely complete but ther is some remedial work to be done on patrts of the path. The issue of cyclsits right of way at the junction of Bruce Crescent is still under consultation. Phase 2 which runs from Ledger Way into Armthorpe is being jointly funded by DMBC and the housing developer at the markham main site. Watch this space for details of this scheme.
Cycle Parking
Safe and secure cycle facilities utilising ‘Byke Bins’ have been introduced at a number of leisure centres including Askern, Adwick,Edlington, St James, Thorne and Hatfield Water Park. The provision at stations is being reviewed and it is hoped the scheme can be extended to Health Centres and libraries.
Publicity
The introduction of the Doncaster Cycling Map in summer 2003 has proved very successful and should be available from cycling shops, libraries and DMBC at Scarborough House. This year DMBC have produced a summer cycling events document which lists rides and events hosted by a number of cycling groups in Doncaster. Available from the outlets listed above we hope this will encourage more cycling activity in the borough
